Getting Started

SpeakPad is designed to be simple. When you first open the app, you'll see an onboarding screen that walks you through setting up a profile for your child. After that, a pre-built communication board with common vocabulary is ready to use immediately.

How It Works

Children tap picture symbols on the board to add words to the message bar at the top of the screen. Tap the speak button to hear the message read aloud. Use backspace to remove the last word, or clear to start over.

Caregiver Settings

To access caregiver settings, tap the gear icon and solve a simple multiplication problem (this is the parental gate). From there you can:

• Add, edit, or remove vocabulary items
• Change the grid size and board layout
• Create sub-boards for different topics
• Import your own images for symbols
• Set custom pronunciations for words
• Back up and restore your data via iCloud
• Export or import boards as .speakpad files
• Manage vocabulary masking (show/hide items)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SpeakPad require an internet connection?
No. SpeakPad works completely offline. Speech, symbols, and all data are on-device.

Can I use my own photos as symbols?
Yes. When adding or editing a vocabulary item, you can choose a photo from your iPad's photo library.

How do I back up my boards?
In the caregiver settings, go to the Profile section. You can back up to iCloud or export a .speakpad file to share or save.

Is my data private?
Completely. SpeakPad collects no data at all. See our Privacy Policy for details.

What are the Mulberry Symbols?
They're a free, open-source symbol set designed for AAC communication, created by Mulberry Symbols and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
